Calendar for interview completion

The first interview needs to be posted by noon next Monday, October 22. That day in class, we will learn how to evaluate, tabulate, and review these posts. The best interview will be awarded a 10% grade boost (one letter grade for the semester). The next week (10-29), we will not meet in class but rather in my office. I will put out a schedule next week for you to meet me in my office for a 10-minute talk about this class and you.
One week later, Monday at noon, the second interview needs to be posted. That's November 5. The last interview is due one week later. All interviews need to be completed by November 12, noon.
The same day, we will discuss topics for final papers. These need to fit into the context of Global Communications so that you can use the newly found competence for the final paper. If a research paper is not your cup of tea, do a fourth interview but know that students who choose that option cannot get an A in class (unless they won an interview competition before).  Final papers are due on the day of our final by 6PM. Questions?? Ask!

Challenges and benefits of interviewing an international student (or an US student)

Create groups of three students. These cannot be people you have worked with before.

1. Brainstorm the topic
2. Create a list of unsorted ideas - at least 12 per person
2.1 Research the topic and see what is available online or in the library. A-papers use sources from the library or web to strengthen their argument
3. Create an outline of your own solution for this writing task and compare it to the group members
4. Change into single mode and write the paper. Take no more than 45 minutes to do that. No later than 7 PM reconvene with your group.
5. Review all three papers and determine, which is best. Write down the reasons in a document that you create in google documents. In that document, compare the strengths and weaknesses of all three papers. Use meaningful parameters to describe strengths and weaknesses.
6. Each group member now links to that google document in their post that contains their personal essay from today.
7. Continue work on your own first interview. It is due on your blog next week.

- the topic of the paper is: Challenges and benefits of interviewing an international student
- the 12 ideas - or more- are elements that support the topic above.

... do not forget

that you have to quote the first complete sentence from page 15 of the selected five books that classmates had brought to class. And you need a bibliography (also called "Works cited") at the end of your post. Author, title, publisher, publication location, and year.

Class tonight as usually MC 206

We will have regular class tonight.

Make yourself familiar with the SCSU library site. It will help you locate books in the library. You need to find five books. If you cannot find the book on the shelf, try asking your classmates :-).

Select five posts from your classmates that describe their library book work from last week. Think of the 25 listed members (on the right side of the class blog)  as five groups. 1-5, 6-10 etc. Pick one from each five in the list. That will - I hope-  involve all members of class. Go find those five books and quote the first sentence of page 15. Describe the book (what it is about, who the author is, where and when it was published, and where) and weave the quote into your text. At the end, create a mini bibliography of the five books and return them quickly. Others will be looking for the same books! Post your findings.

Then go back and study the SCSU library site in detail. Peruse the RefWorks site, create an ID and try using it. Use Group code "RWStCloudSU" and training here. Try out what the website can do for you: create a small bibliography. Post it.

Homework for next week: Think of three countries or regions of the world that your interviewee might come from. Find books and on-line resources and write a report why you are interested in this country or region, and which books you found. 500 words. This will prepare you for the needed country reports of our interviews. Post it on your blog. Due noon next week the day we meet.
